At the base of Castle Rock. The lava from Mt. Erebus (shown in the next photo) is a unique type of basalt called Kenyite, found at only several places in the world. This rock is a hyoclastite, which means it was erupted under water. When Castle Rock was formed by an underice eruption 1.2 million years ago, the ice shelf was1300 feet thicker.
