(Use the horizontal scroll bar.) The South Pole is ideal for radio telescope work because of the relative lack of moisture in the atmosphere. The telescope in the foreground is called DASI and it studies the cosmic microwave background radiation. The large building it is attached to is the MAPO laboratory. The AMANDA electronics are in MAPO. At the left is a power distribution station and emergency generator.
